Here's what the critics in Scotland and Ottawa had to say about the TEMPTING PROVIDENCE . . .
'tis a gift to be simple, and what Robert Chafe's play is doing, day after day, is giving huge pleasure to audiences who find themselves unexpectedly moved by this quiet retelling of a like utterly shaped by concepts of duty and service that have almost dropped out of our western vocabulary.
Joyce McMillan, The Scotsman
A tempting tale of old-fashioned heroism and this simple, deeply sympathetic show leaves you feeling both braced and restored which is suspect is how most of Nurse Bennett's patients felt after seeing her.
Charles Spencer, The Telegraph
To tempt Providence actions must be taken, decisions must be made and an undying belief must endure through all. Thank goodness then, for the efforts of Theatre Newfoundland Labrador, who have assembled a stunning production, fated for success. If you want to see how to stage a play and hold an audience in the palm of your hand, Tempting Providence is how it is done.
RS, Three Weeks in Edinburgh
In its uncluttered profundity, Tempting Providence recalls Lars Von Trier's Dogville. In other words, it’s excellent. Nadine McBay, Metro, Edinburgh, Scotland
Dynamically staged with poise, economy and some truly inventive use of objects (watch out for the baby’s cradle), Tempting Providence is pleasant, informative and a delight to watch. Lorraine McCann, EdinburghGuide.com, Scotland
Nurse's bio a dose of terrific . . . It's one of the finest Canadian productions I’ve seen Denis Armstrong, Ottawa Sun
