PHASE 1 - SCRIPT DEVELOPMENT
The only parameters given was that the resulting script must be original, between 45 mins and 1 hour in length, be able to travel and adjust to differing venues, and reflect their island homes and cultures.

Theatre Newfoundland Labrador's Youth Theatre presents....

With Cruel Times In Between
Based on various works by Al Pittman with permission of publisher, Breakwater Books. This production is a portrait of Newfoundland culture as painted by the rhythmic writings of one of Newfoundland's most beloved poets. Using selections from his poems, prose, songs, and plays, we hope to example a culture and island life, threatened into disappearance by technology, but which remains as true to our spirit as the salt in our breeze.

Second Storey Youth Theatre presents....CHASING A SOUND LIKE RAIN
This lyrical and frank play by Carrie McLean explores the complexities of growing up
on an island, our search for identity, and our connection to home. Set in the caves and forests around iconic Mole Creek, this show features stunning performances and design as well original soundtrack by an emerging local band, Thieves.

PHASE 2 - TRIP TO TASMANIA
With Cruel Times In Between opened at the March Hare, March 12, 2011 to a
great response. Feeling tried and tested positive, we hit the road to Tasmania on
March 23rd, arriving the night of March 24th and putting up our play in the
prestigious Ten Days On The Island Festival on March 25th. Crazy huh? Despite
jet-lag and new venue challenges, opening night and INTERNATIONAL
PRESENTATION jitters, the show ran smoothly. It even got a standing ovation. In
attendance was the Canadian Consul General, Tom MacDonald who was delighted
with the evening's performances overall and was highly complementary.

It was wonderful to see the Second Storey Youth Theatre's (Tasmania group) show,
Chasing A Sound Like Rain which is technically challenging and visually appealing.
The two plays are as different as.....well as Newfoundland and Tasmania. Yet there
is a connection; that of the island home and so they complement each other
perfectly. Their students of both teams are fabulous actors.

Meeting up with our Tasmanian counterparts - Jane, Amanda, Chris and the eight
students, was a momentous happening. The teams mixed and mingled like family.
The Tasmanian students generously billeted our students creating a greater and
lasting bond.

During our stay in Tasmania, the students took in workshops on Voice and Body,
Dance, and Focus on Acting and Directing. Besides their own five performances,
they also got to take in other shows in the Ten Days On The Island Festival e.g.
Jillian Keilly directed play - Poxed; Dinosaur puppetry show; and a Stompin show -
I Love Cars. There were trips to the zoo, the Princess Theatre, the caves, the
Gorge, and shopping.

It was a very successful First Leg though not minus some wonderful mishaps which
just adds spice. Mishaps like the school matinee performance when three of our six
chair fell apart. !!! Yes, it rained chairs - it was horrific. BUT! those fabulous and
professional kids of ours kept it together and never missed a beat Considering the
chair use in the course of the show, I really don't know how they managed but it
was the most proud I've ever been of them. Then there was our Home Alone
moment running for a plane for which we were late and they were trying to hold for
us.....!!! We made it. .....onto Phase 3

PHASE 3 - TRIP TO NEWFOUNDLAND
Now we turn our thoughts and energies to preparing the second leg, August 1st -
14th - THE TASMANIANS ARE COMING! THE TASMANIANS ARE COMING! We have
a lot to plan and much money to raise. The schedule of co-performances in
Newfoundland is-

August 4th & 5th, 9pm @ Gros Morne Theatre Festival, Cow Head
(North American Premiere)

August 10th, 7pm @ Arts and Culture Centre, Corner Brook

August 12th & 13th, 8pm @ LSPU Hall, St. John's

YOUTH THEATRE ISLAND EXCHANGE PROJECT

Theatre Newfoundland Labrador's Youth Theatre is excited and proud to announce an unique theatre exchange program promoting and celebrating culture, theatrical education, and youth. We have linked with Second Storey Youth Theatre of Tasmania, Australia in an epic project involving 18 students (ten from TNL and eight from SSYT). Both groups of young artists from islands at opposite ends of the earth are collaborating to develop, travel, and perform original works that reflect their send of island culture and connection to home. Students will be given opportunities for workshops and performance study while exsampling one another's culture.
The YTIEP is the brainchild of TNL's Artistic Associate (Outreach & Education), Sara...h McDonald-Anderson and SSYT's Jane Johnson. Both have been diligently working on the project since 2009. The project has 3 phases -
1) Development 2009 - Feb 2011
2) Tasmania Leg Mar 23 - Apr 7, 2011
3) Newfoundland Leg Aug 1 - 14, 2011
