It's 1934 in the small village of Inishmaan on the Arran Islands off the western coast of Ireland when the population is excited to learn of a Hollywood film crew's arrival to make a documentary about life on the islands. "Cripple" Billy Claven, eager to escape the gossip, poverty and boredom of Inishmaan vies for a part in the film and to everyone's surprise, the orphan and outcast gets his chance. "Wonderfully dark, mean and hysterical, but under it all is the message that we all need family, community and each other."
